Many visitors to the Caribbean love animals and often notice animals on the islands where they are visiting. These tourists may be surprised to see free-roaming, hungry, injured or sick animals during their Caribbean vacation.

What these same tourists may not know is that there are more than 80 organizations working throughout the Caribbean to improve animal welfare. Some examples of the kinds of services animal welfare organizations provide to their communities include the following:
• Controlling animal populations through sterilization;
• Educating the public on animal care and the connection between animal abuse
     and human violence;
• Providing vaccinations and other veterinary care for animals of low-income people;
• Sheltering, adopting and re-homing animals;
• Preparing for animals in disasters;
• Lobbying for urgently needed legislative reforms and improving enforcement
     of animal protection laws.
