PURPOSE
Expert and peer-to-peer training on critical issues in animal welfare, including organizational development, fundraising, animals in disasters, animal welfare education, protection of marine species, veterinary topics, animal laws, and more.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Participants representing animal welfare groups working in the Caribbean, other NGOs, government officials, and tourism representatives.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED
Organizational development:
Effective management of animal protection organizations for long-term sustainability. This may include topics such as strategic planning, board development, staff recruitment and retention, financial management, operating effective volunteer programs, etc.
Fundraising:
How to raise funds through grants, special events, memberships, local businesses, etc.
Disaster preparedness:
This workshop will build upon the disaster training conducted at the 2006 Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference. It may include topics such as case studies on WSPA risk reduction and preparedness work; how to set up temporary pet and livestock shelters and mobile emergency veterinary clinics; and scenario-based management problems for group discussion and presentation of solutions.
Animal welfare education:
How to start a program, what topics to include, resources (include sharing resources among Caribbean groups).
Other topics in animal welfare:
Alternatives to surgical sterilization; early age spay/neuter; government role in humane animal control, responsible pet ownership, and more.
Protection of marine species:
Sea turtles, wild whales, captive dolphin facilities, etc.; case study of a successful effort to stop a captive dolphin facility; how to conduct a campaign.
